The planned $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery has run into another challenge, this time from the United Kingdom. While the deal has already cleared some regulatory hurdles, British officials are now taking a closer look at what it could mean for the country’s media landscape. Their decision could slow down one of the biggest entertainment mergers in recent years.
According to CNN, UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said she is “minded to intervene” in the merger because of concerns about media plurality and whether the deal is in the public interest. Paramount has until July 6 to respond before the government decides whether to send the transaction to Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority for a more detailed review. If that happens, regulators will examine whether putting major brands like Channel 5, CNN International, TNT Sports and HBO Max under the same corporate umbrella could reduce competition or give the combined company too much influence in the UK’s television and streaming markets.
Both companies have defended the merger, saying it will help them compete in an entertainment industry that has changed dramatically with the rise of global streaming services. Even so, the UK’s latest move shows that regulators are still asking tough questions before giving the deal the green light. As CNN reported, a formal investigation could push back the merger’s timeline, leaving Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery waiting a little longer to find out whether their blockbuster deal can move ahead as planned.
