Finally storming its way into theaters, Twisters is facing down its projected numbers. With the new estimates it faces, it’s looking to be one of the year’s most successful movies so far. Twisters, a follow-up to the 1996 Jan de Bont film, sees two storm chasers with opposite methods work together when a storm that’s unlike anything ever seen before shows up. Directed by Lee Issac Chung, and written by Mark L. Smith, the film stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos.
With $32 million already from opening grosses, the film is projecting a forecast of $74 million come the end of Sunday, for comparison, that comes in higher than the first Twister, which opened at $41 million, and even higher than the projected total ahead of release, which sat around $50 million.
Variety pointed out, as well, that Twisters’ estimated debut will follow in the steps of Inside Out 2, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to be the fourth largest opening of the year. However, it is neck-and-neck with the 3-day total of Despicable Me 4. Despite their close race for first-weekend numbers, Despicable Me 4 takes second place in its third weekend of circulation. By Sunday, it’ll bring in just shy of $24 million, bringing it to about $260 million.
Bronze goes to Inside Out 2, still hanging on to the top three even in its sixth weekend, with $12.5 million. Come Sunday, it’ll be just under $600 million domestically. Fourth goes to Longlegs, still impressing with a $11.7 million total for the weekend, followed by A Quiet Place: Day One at fifth with $5.9 million.
