If that title rings a bell, then maybe you checked out our coverage of this unique horror-documentary hybrid film at SXSW. Either way, time for a refresher: The Nightmare, directed Rodney Ascher (Room 237), documents people who spend most (if not all) of their nights enslaved by terrifying visions and painful physical experiences – a condition known as sleep paralysis. The film consists of interviews with these individuals, and reenactments of their experiences shot like micro-horror flicks.
The Nightmare was generally well received by SXSW audience members – by which we mean they screamed quite a bit and probably had more than a little trouble getting to sleep afterward. After playing at a few festivals (including Sundance 2015) the film is set to receive a wider release (including VOD) on June 5th. In anticipation, check out first official trailer and get acquainted with the Hat Man, his Shadowmen, and the other living horrors that haunt millions of people’s minds across the globe.
