‘Triple Frontier 2’ In Active Script Development At Netflix As Garrett Hedlund Provides Sequel Update

A direct follow-up to Netflix’s 2019 military heist thriller Triple Frontier remains in active development at the streamer, with co-star Garrett Hedlund confirming that an initial script draft has been completed.

Directed and co-written by Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor alongside Mark Boal, the original $115 million feature followed five former U.S. Army Delta Force operatives who reunited to execute a covert multi-million-dollar heist targeting a South American drug lord. The film featured an ensemble lineup including Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Hedlund, and Adria Arjona, generating over 63 million household views during its opening release window.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Hedlund noted that while official production timelines remain contingent on coordinating the ensemble’s packed schedules, the creative development behind the scenes has progressed.

“Charlie’s been off being busy shooting nonstop. We sort of all have,” Hedlund stated. “They took a stab at the script, and I think when they sit down and take another one, there might be some momentum on it… but I feel like the theme is never say never. So, it would certainly be fun to get the band back together on that one.”

The update builds on comments made by Hunnam, who revealed in late 2023 that he had boarded Triple Frontier 2 as a lead producer to explore the post-military lives of the surviving operatives. While Affleck’s character did not survive the events of the original film—leaving any potential involvement limited to a producing capacity through his Artists Equity banner, which maintains an active first-look relationship with Netflix—the narrative conclusion left surviving operators William “Ironhead” Miller (Hunnam), Frankie “Catfish” Morales (Pascal), and Benny Miller (Hedlund) with coordinates to the remainder of the abandoned cash reserves.

No formal greenlight or production start date has been established by Netflix as revisions on the screenplay continue.
