The Trial of the Chicago 7 editor Alan Baumgarten and Palm Springs editors Matthew Friedman and Andrew Dickler won big at the American Cinema Editor’s 71st ACE Eddie Awards, taking home the top dramatic and comedic awards respectively. The virtual ceremony took place on Saturday.
This is Baumgarten’s third ACE award win. 2009 he won an Eddie for Recount, and in 2014 he won an Eddie for American Hustle. It was also the second nomination and first win for Friedman, who was previously nominated last year for his work on The Farewell. This is Dickler’s first nomination and win at the Eddies.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 beat out other awards heavyweights like Mank, Nomadland and Minari, while Palm Springs took the Comedic feature award from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, I Care A Lot and Promising Young Woman.
The films up for the best editing category at the Oscars this year are The Trial of the Chicago 7, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Father. The winner of the Eddie for the dramatic category has gone on to win the Oscar for best editing in five of the last ten years.
Other top winners of the night included Kevin Nolting for his work on Pixar’s Soul, which won the best edited animated feature film award, and Pippa Ehrlich and Dan Schwalm for My Octopus Teacher, which won the award for best edited documentary.
