Ready to sit in the director’s chair again, Lilly Wachowski has signed on to helm a brand new project, Trash Mountain. This marks the first time she has directed a movie apart from her sister since 2014.
Written by Caleb Hearon and Ruby Caster, Trash Mountain features Hearon in the leading role as a gay man who goes back to his home state of Missouri to settle the affairs of his recently passed father. Collider points out that the screenplay carries a reputation of being emotionally charged, but also retains a familiar feeling to it.
Lilly Wachowski is most recognized by audiences for her work on The Matrix, which she directed alongside her sister, Lana. Lilly and Lana Wachowski have worked on many projects side-by-side, getting their start by directing 1996’s Bound. The last film that Lilly went solo on directing was Cloud Atlas.
In a statement sent directly to Collider, Lilly Wachowski said “When my pal Caleb Hearon sent me Trash Mountain I leapt at the chance to direct it. So beautiful and sad and funny! Queer representation and stories are vital at this time as we are being shoved further into the margins. Our amazing writers, Caleb and Ruby are a shining light in all this dang darkness.”
Attached to the film as a producer is Colin Trevorrow. Trevorrow wrote and produced the new trilogy of Jurassic World films, and directed the first and third installment in the trilogy.
“Caleb Hearon and Ruby Caster are true originals and Lilly Wachowski is a living legend. I’m insanely lucky to call them collaborators and friends,” Trevorrow said, building on to the statement that Lilly Wachowski submitted.
