On November 17th in 1978, CBS aired the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. The special was kind of like a variety show and it was composed of different segments including musical segments, some comedy skits, and even an animated sequence that featured the first appearance of Boba Fett. The overarching main plot of the special was about Chewbacca and Han Solo trying to get to Chewie’s home planet in order for the Wookie to celebrate the holiday ‘Life Day’ with his family. With the exception of the animated segment, the Star Wars Holiday Special was despised by critics, fans, and even the cast of Star Wars.
Since 1978 the special has never been rerun on TV nor has it ever received an official release on home media. However fans have been circulating bootleg copies of original VHS recordings of the Star Wars Holiday Special, which has allowed people to view the special.
Now according to Cinema Blend more than 40 years after the original aired Disney will be releasing a spiritual sequel to Star Wars Holiday Special, which will be called LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.
A trailer for the new movie has already been released, revealing that the plot will be set during Life Day and it will be about Rey finding a strange yet powerful item that allows her to travel across time and space. Rey encounters famous Star Wars characters from throughout the franchise. The trailer also shows that Anthony Daniels will be reprising his role as C-3PO, and Billy Dee Williams will be returning to play the charismatic Lando Calrissian. Other things revealed in the trailer are some Easter eggs and jokes about the Star Wars franchise such as pod racing and baby Yoda.
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will be released on Disney+ on November 17th, the 42nd anniversary of the broadcast of the original Star Wars Holiday Special. Unfortunately the original special is still only available through bootlegs.
