Trailer Released for Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’

The trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s latest film has just been unveiled. It boasts impressive names such as Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), Michael Shannon (Midnight Special), Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine). It also features Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth), a staple of del Toro’s films.

As evidenced in the trailer, the film possesses the odd, unsettling, and yet strangely beautiful imagery characteristic of a del Toro film. His latest movie takes place in 1963 in a secretive laboratory under the control of the government. The aura of mystery in the film is compounded even further when Hawkins’ character, a woman who cannot speak, encounters a creature in the lab. Taken from the Amazon, it now resides trapped in glass. She uses sign language to communicate with it, becoming closer to the creature and more involved in its care.

However, her investment is not shared by all the other characters, which leads to them deciding to kill and dissect the creature to understand how it works, allowing del Toro to work his magic as an innovator of horror. It seems like this will inform the rising action and climax of the film, leaving audiences wondering who will survive the movie.

Produced by Fox Searchlight, the film will reach theaters on December 8, 2017.
