The 2018 Sundance Film Festival debut of Tyrel was a success for leading man Jason Mitchell. Not only did Magnolia Pictures pick up the film for U.S release, but the Straight Outta Compton actor furthers his acting prestige in a film that explores how underlying tensions can boil to the top when alcohol and testosterone are combined.
Mitchell plays Tyler, the only black man on a weekend birthday celebration with his white friend and a few other drunken white dudes. Two things are clear from the very start: Tyler clearly feels like the odd man out, and drinking is the name of the game. Throughout the trailer, it seems like he doesn’t know whether to run away screaming or join in on the drunken stupidity. It appears that he finally gives into temptation and things start to go south.
Mitchell is joined by Scott Pilgrim vs. the World actor Michael Cera, It Comes at Night actor Christopher Abbott, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri actor Caleb Landry Jones, and Hereditary’s Ann Dowd. Leading this group of exceptional actors is writer and director Sebastián Silva. Catch Tyrel in theaters on December 5, and check out the trailer below.
