Tom Cruise’s reprisal as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick is coming to the Cannes Film Festival screen for the festival’s 75th anniversary. Even before the pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick had several delays from its original July 2019 release date and, even still, has been one of the films with the most significant pandemic delays. Despite everything, Paramount is set to release the film this May and debut it early.
The sequel takes place more than thirty years after the original film (released in 1986) and follows Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) in his position as one of the Navy’s top aviators. When a new batch of Top Gun graduates come in to train for a dangerous mission, the group includes the son of his late friend, Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. In working with Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Maverick must face the ghosts of his past and confront the high stakes of the mission at hand.
Alongside Tom Cruise and Miles Teller, the film sees Val Kilmer returning with Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, and Monica Barbaro.
The film festival runs from May 17 to May 28, and Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27.
