36 years after the original film, Top Gun: Maverick made its box office Memorial Day opening with $151 million. Worldwide, the film earned $248 million, and Tom Cruise is thrilled about the numbers. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has had his second-best weekend stateside since he did Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest which earned $135.6 million. According to Deadline, updated demographics are 58% men and 42% women. The under-35 crowd made up 45%, showing promise for the future of the franchises. Those over 35 were 55% of ticket-buyers, while the 18-34 group were 37%. The diversity demographics show 66% Caucasian, 16% Latine and Hispanic, 7% African-American, and 7% Asian.
Half of the critics in the audience said Top Gun: Maverick lived up to the hype, and another 30% said they would see the film again in theaters. The audience promises everyone that Top Gun: Maverick is worth seeing in theaters. It did well in the Western US, Rockies, South Central, and the Southeastern US, but was at the norm in the Midwest. The film underperformed in the Northeast and made up 7% of Canada’s box office weekend. The markets in which the film overperformed include Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Seattle, San Diego, Tampa, Portland, Kansas City, Nashville, Oklahoma City, and Jacksonville.
