Tom Welling has signed on for a lead role in the upcoming Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Choice, opposite Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer. Welling plays Dr. Kevin McCarthy in Sparks’ tale of a love triangle played out in coastal North Carolina. Tom Wilkenson, Maggie Grace and Alexandra Daddario are also featured.
The film, currently in preproduction, is the latest of Sparks‘ books to make it to the big screen. In addition to his hit The Notebook, some other Sparks titles to hit the multiplex were Dear John, A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle and The Lucky Ones. The author’s The Best of Me is slated to hit theaters on October 17th. Another title, The Longest Ride, is in production.
The feature is slated to film on location in Wilmington, North Carolina, making it one of the last films to shoot there before the state’s production tax incentives are curtailed. It is the first independent feature from Nicholas Sparks Productions.
Welling, best known for his stint as a young Superman on the series Smallville, was most recently seen alongside Kevin Costner in director Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day.
Ross Katz is set to direct, from a script by Bryan Sipe. No release date has been announced.
