It’s a complicated time for Tom Holland returning to the MCU, as he is trying to crack the code to a new Spider-Man film with Marvel Studios and Sony. According to ComicBook.com, he gave an update to this untitled Spider-Man project during the Sands International Film Festival in Scotland, speaking about how he will always want to play the web-slinging hero.
However, there are complications when figuring out what this new film will entail. Holland says that the best in the business is trying to come up with a story that will not only protect the legacy of the previous films in his specific franchise but also wants to serve up something completely new that doesn’t rehash what has already been done. “We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be,” he explained. “But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect.”
While these plot complications, along with the writer strikes that happened last year, slow down the film being created, Holland sees a bright side, as he says this is the first time that he has been part of the creative process so early on in a film and is learning a lot from those around him, calling it “a really fun stage” for him. Holland reflected, “This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early. It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning.”
Besides Holland, the team for this film currently comprises franchise producer Amy Pascal, No Way Home co-producer Rachel O’Connor, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, and other Marvel Studios executives.
Sony originally slated the untitled Spider-Man project for theaters on June 27, 2025. But with the mission to ensure this film is just right, it might be a while until fans can see this new creation on the big screen. “Like I said,” Holand reiterated, “everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things.”
