Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’ upcoming villains-turned-heroes flick, appears to be hunting for new team leader. Tom Hardy (the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road) is reported to have left the project, citing scheduling conflicts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Hardy was set to play team leader Rick Flagg in Suicide. He was to join Jared Leto’s Joker, Will Smith’s Deadshot, and Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn, amongst others, in the all-star extravaganza based on the world of DC Entertainment’s roster of famous villains. Suicide Squad begins shooting in Toronto in mid-April. Hardy’s Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15, which gives the actor press commitments falling smack-dab in the middle of the shoot.
Reportedly, the studio is eyeing Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as a replacement for Hardy, but no news has emerged as to whether or not he will accept the offer. Gyllenhaal is currently appearing on Broadway in the play Constellations. The show is set to run until mid-March, so it’s not certain if there would be ample time for the actor to commit to an April start.
Suicide Squad is set for an August 2016 release.
