On the second day of the Berlin Film Festival/European Film Market, Sony Pictures picked up the worldwide rights to Greyhound, written by and starring Tom Hanks. The film is directed by Get Low director Aaron Schneider. FilmNation financed the film with budget of around $30 million. Deadline was the first to report this story.
The title Greyhound comes from the WWII battleship that Hanks will helm as a navy office in the film. Hanks adapted the novel The Good Sheperd by C.S. Forester to develop the screenplay for the film. Forester also wrote The African Queen novel, the inspiration for the 1951 film by John Huston.
Although the deal is not yet set in stone, all the details are almost in place. Greyhound plans to begin shooting this May and is expected to be theatrically released in 2018.
Hanks recently starred as Captain Sully in the Clint Eastwood film Sully. Look for Hanks next in sci-fi thriller The Circle alongside Emma Watson. As Hanks is reaching the later years of his career, look for him to be snagging a lot of producer credits on both film and television projects in the next few years including the film adaptation of Green Day musical American Idiot, as well as the film adaptation of the David McCullough novel 1776. He is also co-writing the script for Major Matt Mason, about a group of people living on the south pole of the moon.
