Jonathan Levine, director of genre-spanning projects such as Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers series and comedy films Warm Bodies and 50/50, is in talks to direct the sequel to Days of Thunder at Paramount. The original film, which premiered in 1990, starred Tom Cruise as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle. Cruise is set to reprise the role.
Plot details for the Days of Thunder sequel remain quietly under wraps, but it was reported that Paramount found confidence in Levine helming the project after his upcoming sports drama Mr. Irrelevant, which stars David Corenswet, garnered positive reception at test screenings ahead of its Christmas release.
The screenplay for the sequel is written by Will Staples, who’s known for his work in the Call of Duty video game franchise.
The 1990 film Days of Thunder also starred Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Nicole Kidman, Michael Rooker, Cary Elwes, and John C. Reilly. The film was directed by Top Gun director Tony Scott and has garnered a cult following amongst NASCAR racing fans.
