Tom Cruise Caught In A Time Loop In ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Trailer

Tom Cruise as Major William Cage in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’

Considering their respective talents, Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman seem like a perfect match. Liman made his name on some well-received action blockbusters, most notably The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Tom Cruise, who continues to do his own stunts at the ripe age of 51, doesn’t seem to want to stop saving the world. In 2014, this action-junkie dream team will be making their debut with Edge of Tomorrow, a film that looks one part Elyisum, one part Source Code, a serving of Starship Troopers, and a dash of Groundhog Day.

In Edge of Tomorrow Tom Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage, a soldier fighting a war with aliens. When Cage is killed during a battle, he wakes up to find himself alive the day before that battle. This cycle continues and he’s forced to live out the same battle over and over again, getting better every time. Along the way he meets a Special Forces warrior (played by Emily Blunt), and they work together to take the fight back to the aliens. The film is based on the praised Japanese manga All You Need Is Kill (which also served as one of the film’s former titles) by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

While their last sci-fi action efforts apart from each other weren’t too successful (Doug Liman’s Jumper and Tom Cruise in Oblivion), their partnership might be what they’ve both needed. Edge of Tomorrow looks to have the right amount of action to complement Cruise’s intense hero demeanor, and Liman has a tried-and-true leading man again, which worked in spades for him when he directed Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

Tom Cruise and Doug Liman apparently enjoyed working together so much that they’ve already talked about teaming up again for El PresidenteWe’ll have to see if that chemistry translates to good story when Edge of Tomorrow hits theaters June 6th, 2014.
