Just in time for Godzilla Day, Toho has officially announced a sequel to the monster hit that was Godzilla: Minus One. The film is currently going under the title of Godzilla: Minus Zero, with Toho showing off a logo alongside the announcement.
Godzilla: Minus One took the King of the Monsters back to his roots, following a failed kamikaze pilot returning to a devastated Japan in the wake of World War II. As he starts to pick up the pieces of his life, a monster he encountered during the war surfaces once again and threatens everything he built up again.
Screenrant noted that Minus One was nothing short of a smash hit when it came out. Beloved by fans and audiences alike, the film made a massive $113 million worldwide and would even go on to make Godzilla history, winning Best Visual Effects. The win and the gross were also off a staggering reported budget of just around $10 million.
Hollywood Reporter stated that full plot details are currently known. Writer, director, and VFX artist of Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki,is stepping back into those same roles for Minus Zero, which is reportedly being viewed as a “statement piece,” according to HR.
Given the title, however, fans are expecting the film to be a direct sequel. The end of Minus One did set up for a sequel, with teasers that suggested the story wasn’t over for both the Big G and the human characters. But anything else about Minus Zero is up in the air, as no details have been given.
Godzilla: Minus Zero is expected to hit theaters December 2026.
