A couple days ago Comicbook.com spoke to Image Comics co-founder and comic book legend Todd McFarlane. Besides talking about his most recent achievements, they took the time to ask McFarlane about one character in particular, Spawn.
It’s no secret that he’s been working for a while now developing a rebooted feature film based on the character. Let it be known, the movie will NOT be a sequel to 1998’s attempt with John Leguizamo in a fat-suit and clown make-up. Instead, McFarlane wants to make it a movie that has more in common with horror films than the popular superhero genre.
McFarlane had this to say:
It’s slowly moving forward, just trying to put all the pieces together both from an artistic and a financial. The intent is trying to finance as much as possible internally and then finding partners who will help in the production of it as we move forward,” McFarlane told us. “I can argue getting the money might be harder than getting everybody signed off on the story. What I can tell you is what I’ve told everybody else: it will be a definite R. I’m not going for the same crowd that Marvel and DC is going for; I’m going for the same crowd that horror film releases going for. People who want to take their boyfriend or girlfriend or go out with the girls and go to the movies and get spooked.
This an idea I can get into, because- and let’s be real for a second, reboots are expected, especially nowadays. The number of different versions that are being released with these characters will continue to grow because adaptations of comic books are popular and really do have a huge fanbase. Everyone wants an updated version of their favorite hero/vigilante, it’s human nature to want something fresh and new. So, maybe a new Spawn, out of the typical superhero genre is exactly what we need.
