Illumination’s next big animated feature takes the shape of Not Alone, starring Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez in the two lead roles. The film follows the romance between an introverted rocket mechanic Joe (Chalamet) and astro-botanist Fran (Gomez) as they try to develop the first plant fueled rocket.
The official synopsis from Universal reads, “When Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of this revolutionary rocket, there are immediate sparks, but neither is particularly adept at romance. Life becomes more complicated when three aliens—tiny, unruly and adorable—take refuge in Joe’s home. Dunk, Welly and Shirm are on the interplanetary run from a zealous-yet-inept officer of the law named Zandro. The aliens determine that Fran’s rocket could provide their means of getting back home to safety.”
This marks Chalamet’s second feature voice acting credit, with the first being the Netflix animated film Entergalactic. Selena Gomez has several voice acting credits, most notably as Mavis in the Hotel Transylvania films. The three aliens are voiced by British comedians Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou. Officer Zandro is voiced by Brett Goldstein, with Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris also in supporting roles. The film will hit theaters on April 16, 2027.
Timothée Chalamet actually teased this announcement a day, posting a cloudy sky image on his Instagram story with the caption, “new movie announcement tmrw :)” Not Alone is directed by Eric Guillon, who co-directed Despicable Me 3. He is joined by two co-directors, Claire Dodgson, who has edited several Illumination films, and Jonathan Del Val, co-director of Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Secret Life of Pets 2.
Illumination released The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this year, becoming the first film of 2026 to gross over $1 billion worldwide. In a few short weeks, they release their next film, Minions and Monsters, which hits theaters on July 1. After that, Not Alone is the next movie on their calendar.
