The Toronto International Film Festival is not only a place for filmmakers to sell distribution rights to movies they’ve already finished, but also to find funding for projects in the works. So it is with The Keys to the Street, a Lond0n-set thriller adapted from author Ruth Rendell’s novel by writer/directors Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) and Michael Stokes (Exit Speed, The Beacon). Neither one will be directing, however, with Nolan presumably still working on Interstellar and Stokes busy on his own projects Infiltrators and Crash Bandits when The Keys to the Street moves into production early next year.
The directorial duties instead will be the responsibility of Julius Sevcik, a Czech director for whom this will be the third feature project, and likely his highest profile one to date with today’s announcement that Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, TV’s Lie to Me), and Max Irons (TV’s The White Queen, the forthcoming Vivaldi) will play the lead roles. The story follows a woman (Arterton) who takes a housesitting job in a well-to-do London neighborhood to escape her ex-boyfriend (Roth) and strikes up an affair with another man (Irons) as someone perpetrates a string of mysterious murders.
Arterton had been attached for some time as the project floated through development, but the additions of Roth and Irons (not to mention Arterton’s rising star power) will certainly sweeten the deal for potential buyers. Myriad Pictures, the company behind (among other films) the forthcoming The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and Her, will produce the project.
