With a new three minute trailer for Christopher Nolan’s newest film Oppenheimer being released in theaters, fans have been able to get a better sense for the film’s story and tone. It appears that beyond being a biopic, the film will touch on themes of morality, ethics, and the destruction caused by war.
The film is expected to center around J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and General Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon) as they, and other scientists, lead a project to create the first atomic bomb. At this point in the narrative, it became a race during World War II to see which country would be able to create this weapon first – The United States or Nazi Germany. Specifically, the trailer centers around Oppenheimer’s statement that setting the bomb off, even in testing, could potentially destroy the planet.
At Cinema Con, Nolan stated: “In learning about that story, I wanted to be there in that room with them and see what that must have been like… I wanted to take the audience there. To do so, I’ve assembled the most incredible cast and the finest technicians.”
The film will release June 21st.
