Disney may have plans for Star Wars to take a short hiatus following last month’s release of Rise of Skywalker, but that doesn’t mean they can’t start hunting for the franchise’s next director. Taikia Waititi, director of the Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit, and probably more famously 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, has been approached to develop the project according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It is still unclear as to what exactly this project is, but it’s worth noting that Marvel boss Kevin Feige, who worked closely with Waititi on Ragnorak, additionally has a Star Wars project in development. No confirmations have been made as to whether these are joint or separate projects.
This won’t be the director’s first glimpse into working on Star Wars projects, as he provided the voice for IG-11 on The Mandalorian and recently directed the Disney+ show’s finale. Waititi is developing other projects at the moment, including Fox Searchlight’s Next Goal Wins and the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to begin production this summer. Considering his busy schedule and full to-do list, it may be a while before fans get their eyes on a Waititi-helmed Star Wars film.
Neither Waititi, Disney, or Lucasfilm has replied for comment.
