The trailer for Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey has arrived. The rite of passage of a Stephen King adaption has been passed down from directors such as Mike Flanagan, Brian De Palma, and Stanley Kubrick and has made its way to Longlegs director Perkins. While other teasers have given glimpses of the titular toy, this trailer shows a better look into Theo James’ character.
Based on King’s short story, The Monkey follows twin brothers Hal and Bill, played by James. In their childhood, they came across an old-school monkey toy that their father owned. The toy starts showing its sinister ways quickly, as everyone around the twins dies in mysterious and disturbing ways. The pair get rid of the monkey to stop the deaths around them, but when the same thing starts in their adulthood, they have to track it back down to get rid of it once and for all.
The White Lotus star plays both Hal and Bill, with the addition of Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Colin O’Brien, Christian Convery, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy to the ensemble cast.
Based on this trailer and previous teasers, this film will blend story and gruesome deaths to make a chilling experience. Wood and Perkins are good friends, and when chatting with Collider, Wood said that Perkins has “been quietly ticking away and making extraordinary genre films for years, and I’ve long wondered when he was gonna have his moment. It’s just thrilling that he finally is, and he deserves it. He’s an extraordinary atmosphere master, an incredible filmmaker, and a great writer. This is an exciting time.”
The Monkey releases in theaters on February 21. Check out the trailer below.
