The second half of the legendary hit Broadway musical Wicked’s big screen adaptation finally hit theaters this weekend. Much like Dorothy’s house, Wicked: For Good crushed records left and right. Directed by John M. Chu, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film took off with an amazing start in previews of up to $30 million domestically. Wicked: For Good scored a grand total of $150 million by Sunday. This puts it as the biggest opening for a Broadway musical on screen, the third biggest musical of all time after The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, second biggest opening for Universal after Jurassic World, with $208.8 million, and the weekend before Thanksgiving, after The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with $158.1 million. Wicked: For Good also snagged the second-best opening weekend after Minecraft’s $208.9 million for 2025.
Revitalizing the box office, thankfully, after October tried to smother it, Wicked: For Good shows tentpoles can still hold up hope for studios as it landed an international opening of $76 million for a grand total of $226 million.
Trailing behind for a modest sophomore outing is Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which took home $9.12 million with its second-place crown. Predator: Badlands took $6.25 million in its third week with a third-place finish.
The Running Man is still in the race with a fourth-place finish for its second week and $5.8 million after its softer-than-desired start.
Rounding out the top five is newcomer Rental Family, which is the latest in the string of underperforming adult dramas of 2025. Rental Family’s studio through Searchlight Pictures hopes the film’s staying power will help with a slow crawl back to the black, along with the hopeful incoming award season nominations.
Newcomer, SISU Road to Revenge, premiered with $2.6 million, taking a sixth-place finish, beating Regretting You in its fifth week, which snagged $1.52 million for seventh.
Nuremberg finished eighth in its third week with $1.14 million, and ninth went to Black Phone 2 with $1 million, beating Sarah’s Oil with $771 thousand.
