John Carpenter is an iconic name within the horror genre, known for Halloween, Christine, and The Fog. One of his most iconic films is The Thing. Based on the 1938 novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, The Thing tells the story of an alien species uncovered in Antarctica by a twelve-man research team. To celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary, The Thing will be arriving in select theaters for a special two-day showing.

Carter, David Clennon, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, and Richard Masur, The Thing is one of those rare sci-fi/horror films that feature an entirely male cast and intelligent characters. The film is notable for its creature effects, lighting, atmosphere, and haunting soundtrack courtesy of the late Ennio Morricone. This film plays more closely to the source material than the original 1951 film, The Thing From Another World.
At the time of the film’s release in 1982, reviews were negative due to the film’s slow pacing, excessive gore, and perceived nihilistic tone when compared to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which was released just two weeks earlier. Since then, The Thing has been regarded as one of the best science fiction and horror films ever made and has gained a cult following. A prequel was released in 2011, which received mixed reviews.
