Thea Sofie Loch Næss, best known for her recent role as Agnes in The Ugly Stepsister, is to lead CRCL9, a psychological thriller directed by M. Axilleas from a script co-written with Erik Van Wyck.
The feature was inspired by true events, which has Loch Næss portraying “an American woman studying in Europe who has been targeted by an online stalking game.” As the circumstances become more and more dire, the woman has to start “playing the game herself in an attempt to outwit her stalker.” Murderbot’s Chris Weitz is executive producing under his Depth of Field banner. Axilleas will produce along with Van Wyck and John Paterakis. Andrew Miano and Dan Balgoyen will join Weitz to executive produce, and Lilette Botassi of Greece’s Inkas Films will also executive produce.
Loch Næss first gained global recognition earlier this year with the release of The Ugly Stepsister, a body horror and directorial debut from Emilie Blichfeldt. The horror film first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, only to be met with widespread critical acclaim, and was released in theaters in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden this spring. Before that, Loch Næss was more well-known in her hometown of Oslo, with roles in The Last King, La Palma, and So Long, Marianne. Axilleas commented on his experience making the film with Loch Næss, saying, “It’s often said that 90% of filmmaking is casting, and I experienced that axiom working with Thea Sofie Loch Næss on CRCL9. The story tracks the descent of a young woman into existential darkness, and it all rested on Thea’s shoulders. She committed fully and made a daring leap into the role.”
CRCL9 has recently wrapped production.
