‘The Suicide Squad’ To Be More Comedic, According to Joel Kinnaman

With James Gunn now directing the soft reboot of Suicide Squad, many fans are expecting it to incorporate his bizarre sense of humor. The humor in James Gunn’s films can vary from the offbeat wacky comedy of Guardians of the Galaxy to the darker black comedy seen in Super. Both styles  could be very fitting for a film centered on a huge cast of criminals like Suicide Squad. Fortunately, it seems DC will be utilizing Gunn’s sense of humor fairly well according to one of the main actors.

Joel Kinnaman, who’s returning as Rick Flag, stated in a recent interview from Variety how funny this new Suicide Squad movie is turning out.  He expressed a lot of positive energy working with Gunn and the rest of the cast in this film, describing production as a learning experience.  Kinnaman also described the film’s tone as “It’s so funny…I feel like I’m shooting my first comedy”.

While the 2016 Suicide Squad initially had more of a serious tone, it ended up going through excessive re-shoots to lighten up the film’s tone, making the comedy feel rather forced according to critics. Considering Gunn’s prior films are more well known for their humor compared to David Ayer’s work, it makes sense for this new reboot to feel more naturally comedic. With one of the returning actors stating this, it sounds fairly promising that The Suicide Squad will provide fans a very humorous experience.

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6th 2021.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
