‘The Substance’ Director Pulls Out Of Film Festival In Response To Misogyny

Coralie Fargeat, director of The Substance, has just announced that she will be pulling the film from the  Camerimage Film Festival in Poland. This decision was made as a response to controversial, misogynistic comments that the festival’s CEO, Marek Zydowicz, made last week. The comments in question targeted female cinematographers specifically, posing the idea that their work was inferior to male cinematographers.

In response, Fargeat posted on X saying:

“After discovering the highly misogynistic and offensive words of the director of the Camerimage Film Festival, I have decided to pull The Substance from the festival (and [director of photography] Benjamin Kračun has decided not to attend), — The Substance is about the impact of exactly these types of behaviors on our world. We shouldn’t tolerate them anymore. We send our support to all involved in the festival and hope this decision will help create a much needed change.”

As touched on in Fargeat’s post, The Substance’s message is about misogyny and unfair beauty standards, particularly in Hollywood. As a result, it makes sense that the director would be opposed to Zydowicz’s behavior and want to make a public statement. The response by Fargeat will hopefully open people’s eyes to misogyny in the film industry and inspire change.
