The Star Wars anthology movie due out in 2018 will tell the origin story of bounty hunter and fan favorite Boba Fett. The character is best known for being one of many bounty hunters hired by Darth Vader to track down Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia in The Empire Strikes Back. Fett ended up tracking them down in Cloud City, which led to Solo being frozen in carbonite at the end of that movie.
The character of Boba Fett has been at the center of many rumors since Disney first announced that they would release anthology films in between the main entries in the saga. The first spin-off movie, Star Wars: Rogue One, to be released in 2016, will focus on the rebel spies who stole the plans for the original Death Star. That movie is being directed by Gareth Edwards, and Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) was originally brought on to direct this second spin-off movie centered around Boba Fett, but recently left the project due to “creative differences.”
Boba Fett’s story was most recently told in the second prequel, Attack of the Clones, where he was the clone of his father, Jengo Fett, who was the basis for the clones that made up the Republic army in the Clone Wars and would later become the first stormtroopers. Along with much of the prequel trilogy, this story was met with disappointment from fans. Disney has distanced itself from the prequels since they acquired the franchise so it will be interesting to see how they tackle the character of Boba Fett.
In the meantime, Disney will be looking for a new director to replace Trank.
