After bad news upon bad news for Saw fans, there is a ray of hope. Yesterday, it was reported that Blumhouse is set to purchase the rights currently held by Twisted Pictures for their share of the Saw franchise.
This is excellent news for Saw fans, as it gives hope that the franchise will not stay stuck on the back burner. However, no new movie has been announced at the time, and Lionsgate still owns 50% of the franchise. Blumhouse’s purchase would take over the IP’s ownership from Mark Burg and Oren Koules, who co-own Twisted Pictures. But, the takeover would also mean that the first film’s director and future franchise executive producer, James Wan, would be closer than ever to a new project.
Kevin Greutert was set to return for the eleventh film, which was announced last year, after helming the tenth. However, that installment was pushed to 2025. It seemed as though things were on track for the next film, with franchise favorite Tobin Bell’s return to the franchise, but then it was revealed the film was no longer happening. Writers of the project, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan revealed that progress for the film has not moved forward since the day the turned in the script in 2024.
“We haven’t heard anything since May. It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.” The duo added that there was some “inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate” which kept both parties far from joining “on the same page.”
With Blumhouse just announcing a sequel to Ma, and previously backing the sequel trilogy for the Halloween franchise, and preparing for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, it is hard to tell if the studio will create an addition to the Saw franchise.
