The Russo Brothers Talk ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ And Its Impact On The MCU Timeline At SXSW

The Avengers are assembling once again to take on their greatest threat yet in Avengers: Doomsday. But before the heroes can make it back to the big screen, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have shared what audiences can come to expect when it comes to how this fits into the greater cinematic universe.

Avengers: Doomsday brings the Avengers, Thunderbolts, X-Men, and Fantastic Four together for the first time to face a new threat: Doctor Doom. With Doom threatening every reality there is, all the heroes will have to call upon all their strength, and allies both new and old, if there’s a chance to save their worlds.

As South by Southwest kicked off, the Russo Brothers were in attendance for the festivities. With the anticipation for Doomsday rapidly mounting, Hollywood Reporter noted the topic came up rather quickly. Although the pair took a break from Marvel directing, the duo behind hits like Avengers: Endgame and Captain America: The Winter Soldier shared that Doomsday’s genesis came about when Stephen McFeely, a frequent MCU scribe, had a very specific idea on what direction they could take the story.

With that idea, left up to audiences speculation until December, the Russos divulged that they wanted this film to stand alone. “We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past,” they said, according to Hollywood Reporter.

However, one part that’s catching some fans off balance was their saying that Doomsday could be something of a clean slate. “We were both talking about this concept that we are back to phase zero,” they said. As to what exactly that could entail is unknown, but many are speculating that Doomsday, and the subsequent Secret Wars, will reset the slate of movies, and restart the timeline in movies that follow. These comments from the directors are causing some to wonder if it’ll be touched upon sooner rather than later with Doomsday.
