The North American rights to the sex comedy The Overnight have been acquired by upstart distributor The Orchard after a heated bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival, according to Variety. The film stars Taylor Shilling (Netflix’s Orange is the New Black) and Adam Scott (the upcoming Hot Tub Time Machine 2) as Emily and Alex, couple who move to Los Angeles with their young son. After a chance encounter with another family at a local park, they find themselves enmeshed in a most intriguing “play-date.” Jason Schwartzman (Big Eyes) and Judith Godreche portray the mysterious couple. The Orchard, which started in music distribution, has only recently entered the film arena. Despite such heavy hitters as Lionsgate and Roadside entering the fray, The Orchard scored distribution rights with what was said to have been a more than $1 million opening bid. The Overnight was produced by Gettin’ Rad Productions, Adam and Naomi Scott’s Shingle, along with the Duplass Brothers (The Skeleton Twins). The film was written and directed by Patrick Brice.
