The One I Love, first shown at Sundance and just recently Tribeca, is difficult to talk about because 1) a central plot twist prevents many from discussing it in length and 2) we actually haven’t seen it yet. However, it will be released on August 15 this year. Being only months away, it begs the question: how will RADiUS-TWC market it?
According to the official synopsis, “On the brink of separation, Ethan and Sophie escape to a beautiful vacation house for a weekend getaway in an attempt to save their marriage. What begins as a romantic and fun retreat soon becomes surreal when an unexpected discovery forces the two to examine themselves, their relationship, and their future.” The “unexpected discovery” seems to be at the heart of the film, so, again, it will be noteworthy to see how RADiUS-TWC handles the publicity and marketing for a film so dependent on its twist. The one film clip released (below) offers only a small taste to the core mystery, but we will certainly be on the lookout for future trailers and other promotional materials.
With only a trio of cast members, Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed) and Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Top of the Lake) star as the couple in danger of breaking up and Ted Danson (TV’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) as their therapist that convinces them to go on the retreat. The film is also the debut feature for both director Charlie McDowell and screenwriter Justin Lader.
