‘The Old Guard’ Tops Weekend Netflix Charts, Already in Talks for a Sequel

This week, blockbuster action flick The Old Guard debuted on Netflix and has held the number one spot since its release. Starring Charlize Theron, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Kiki Layne, the Netflix original is based on a graphic novel series and follows a group of immortals trying to stay under the radar in the modern world as they introduce new immortal Nile (Layne) to their longterm ways of living and fighting for what’s right.

In response to the film’s immediate success, director Gina Prince-Bythewood has shared that there have been talks for sequels in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. She and writer Greg Rucka had plans to turn the stand-alone into a trilogy, working with the material of the graphic novels of which there are also a trio.

Without any spoilers, the ending of the film sets it up well for a sequel, stirring up new drama to make viewers anticipate what comes next. Prince-Bythewood gives fans hope for more saying, “Where the story goes is pretty phenomenal, so if the audience is for it, I think we are as well.”

Netflix has not yet announced that a sequel is officially greenlit, but if the fans are as vocal as they have been and reviews stay high, then an announcement is sure to come.
