‘The Matrix 4’ Release Date Delayed A Whole Year To Spring 2022

The untitled fourth Matrix film is reportedly moving back its release date a whole year to April 1, 2022. This bold move comes from Warner Bros in the wake of other movies like Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 shifting their release dates deeper into the calendar. Originally set to release on May 21, 2021, The Matrix 4 had been in production in Berlin, Germany before getting halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. There have been reports that the sequel will restart production next month, as countries and states slowly begin to lift their lockdown restrictions.

Warner Bros luckily had the April 1 date on hold, which is the weekend after Disney opens  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on March 25, 2022. However, the delay of The Matrix 4 will mark a cascade effect on the other movies’ release dates, such as Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong taking Matrix 4‘s original date instead of its initial Nov. 20 release this year. Also on that date is Lionsgate’s Spiral, the Saw reboot starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson.

Original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are returning for the fourth film in the famed franchise along with co-creator Lana Wachowski. Joining the cast are new faces including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, and Neil Patrick Harris. The film is in co-production with Village Roadshow, which also financed the original The Matrix trilogy.

The Matrix 4 isn’t the only project that Warner Bros. has pushed back. The studio is also removing Anne Hathaway’s Witches remake from their release schedule in October, as well as pushing the Tom and Jerry live action feature back from December 23 to March 5, 2021. The studio also announced that it will release an untitled New Line horror movie on June 4, 2021, and that an untitled Warner Bros. “event film” planned for Oct. 16 has been removed from the schedule as well.
