‘The Marvels’ Has Rocky Start To Box Office Success With $47 Million Opening

The Marvels was expected to have a phenomenal opening due to being the long-awaited sequel to Captain Marvel. However, it is reported to have only earned $6.6 million in Thursday previews compared to Captain Marvel’s previews grossed $20.7 million in 2019. When the film was released, it drew in a relatively measly $47 million domestically

In this sequel, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) exacts retribution against the Supreme Intelligence when she suddenly is responsible for the weight of a universe thrown into chaos. As her responsibilities lead her through a wormhole tied to a Kree uprising, Carol’s abilities intertwine with those of Kamala Khan, the devoted Ms. Marvel from Jersey City, and her estranged niece, Captain Monica Rambeau.

Many have anticipated this movie since Danvers’ first appearance in Captain Marvel and her role in Avengers: Endgame. The film stands out not only with its three female leads but also from its director, Nia DaCosta, who is the youngest director in the MCU and the first black woman director in Marvel.

Thursday previews usually do not have to dictate the movie’s overall success, but many feared what this worrying start could mean for the final box office numbers. The Flash, for instance, only grossed $9.7 million in previews and resulted in a minimal $55 million domestic opening. As a result, The Marvels is anticipated to achieve a modest $60 million to $65 million in box office revenue. The Quorum goes even further, predicting a figure below $60 million. Despite these projections, Marvel and Disney maintain optimism, banking on the potential for increased interest and awareness, with a potential boost expected from the fact that some children will leave early from school due to Veterans Day, even though the official holiday falls on Saturday.
