After Disney lifted the official review embargo for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first batch of reviews was released for the first theatrical Star Wars movie in 7 years. And in its first batch of critical reactions, critics are split on the film. Some critics praised the film, particularly Pedro Pascal’s performance as the titular bounty hunter and Ludwig Göransson’s score. Some critics were also dazzled by the film’s action set pieces, particularly the opening set piece set in a snowy landscape. Other critics, however, were less than thrilled by the film, noting a lack of stakes and a forgettable supporting cast. Some critics also took issue with the film’s CGI-heavy action sequences.
Currently, the film has a 60% Fresh critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that many critics gave it a positive review. On Metacritic, the film’s score is currently much more mixed at 55.
The Mandalorian and Grogu stars Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and the voices of Jeremy Allen White, Martin Scorsese, and Steve Blum. The film is directed by Jon Favreau and is written by Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor. It will be released in theaters this Friday, May 22, in standard and premium large formats, including Real-D 3D and IMAX.
