Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk, an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, has been earning excellent reviews and acclaim during its theatrical run. The film has already recovered its reported $20 million budget, without starting the international rollout.
The film has already surpassed The Shawshank Redemption‘s $28 million, as well as the first Stephen King adaptation, Carrie. Directed by Brian De Palma and released in 1976, Carrie became a staple in the horror genre and was remade in 2013 by Kimberley Peirce. The original film starred Sissy Spacek, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance.
Since then, there have been over 100 film and television adaptations of King’s books. There have been a few this year in addition to The Long Walk, including The Life of Chuck and The Monkey. The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell, will hit theaters soon.
The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89%, and stars Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson as the two leads, alongside Mark Hamill as the antagonist. The film is set in a totalitarian future where an annual competition is held that requires teenagers to maintain a minimum walking speed, or risk dying. The book, which was the first one that King ever wrote, was an inspiration for the Hunger Games franchise, which Lawrence is returning to direct for Sunrise on the Reaping.
