A24 released the first trailer for Olivia Wilde’s Sundance hit, The Invite, today. The film follows a married couple, Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Wilde), who are experiencing a challenging period in their marriage when they decide to invite their upstairs neighbors (Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton) over for a dinner party. However, what’s meant to be a night of treats and titillating conversation does not go as planned.
The trailer features a clever and creative way to name-drop the A-list cast. After an unknown activity is presented by Norton and Cruz, Rogen seeks some clarification, pointing to each character as their name is plastered on the screen, “Just to be clear”, Rogen says, “You, you, her – and me?”
A24 acquired the film after a highly competitive bidding war at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Wilde directs from a script written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. This would be Wilde’s third directing credit. She previously helmed 2019’s Booksmart and 2023’s Don’t Worry Darling. The latter was heavily scrutinized in the media due to on-set gossip and drama, but it seems to not have had an effect on Wilde’s directorial talents.
David Ramsey of the Hollywood Reporter writes in his review, “After the disproportionate bashing Wilde took on Don’t Worry Darling, her new movie should silence the doubters. At this point, it’s hard to deny she’s the real deal as a director.”
The Invite will be released in select theaters on June 26 and released everywhere in July. View full trailer below.
