After releasing last week, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, the sequel to the 2017 Lionsgate action-comedy, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, has beaten out A Quiet Place Part II at the box office. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard earned $11.6 million from 3,331 venues, while the Quiet Place sequel earned $9.4 million.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard stars Ryan Reynolds, Salma Hayek and Samuel L. Jackson, and marks one of the first films post-vaccine to exclusively release in theaters. It’s collected a total of $17 million so far worldwide, but with a budget of $70 million it’ll need some more attention if it intends on turning a profit.
Hopping up to third place was Sony’s family film, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which took in $6.1 million in its second weekend. It hasn’t been smash hit at the domestic box office, but worldwide the film has earned an impressive total of over $70 million. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Cruella are duking it out for the fourth and fifth places for the weekend, with both of them earning $5.1 million during the weekend.
Jon M. Chu‘s musical adaptation, In The Heights, may be getting critical acclaim, but it struggled at the box office this last weekend. The film saw 62% decline from its opening, earning only $4.3 million. Although, unlike The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, In The Heights was also released for free to HBO Max subscribers, so it could be that most viewers are opting to experience the film at home.
