Hatsune Miku has been a musical icon in Japan for the past decade, having first appeared in 2007 as one of Crypton Future Media’s Vocaloid characters. Users could pick Miku’s voice to produce their own songs, making Miku a fast-rising virtual pop star. In the past few years, Miku has had other successful pursuits in other media art forms, her most recent impressive venture being in the world of anime. On February 18th, it was confirmed by the film’s official X account that Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing surpassed the 1 billion yen mark, approximately equal to $6.62 million, in ticket sales. This film has held a spot in the top ten releases for Japan theaters for five consecutive weeks.
Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, described by Screenrant “Centers on Ichika, a high school musician with the rare ability to enter a mysterious realm called ‘SEKAI,’ where she and her friends reveal their innermost feelings through music alongside Hatsune Miku.” The movie, which was inspired by SEGA’s Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! Rhythm game, has Ichika meet a different version of Miku, one that she has never encountered before. This Miku grapples to connect with her steadfast audience and stir up hearts. To help find her lost spark, Miku must lean on the people around her, including Ichika.
The film, animated by the studio P.A. Works, has voice actress Saki Fujita reprise her role of Miku in Colorful Stage! The Movie as she first supplied her voice for the original Vocaloid software. Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing is set to release in North American theaters on April 11 and is directed by Hiroyuki Hata with a script by Yoko Yonaiyama. We will have to wait and see if it makes as big of a splash there as it did in Japan.
