In this day and age, nerds pretty much rule the world. The iPhone is a common accessory where once it was a piece out of science-fiction, technology making leaps and bounds in achievement every day, and of course the film/TV industry dominated by sci-fi, fantasy and superheroes. Nowhere else is this domination of nerd pop culture more proudly displayed than at this year’s 42nd annual Saturn Awards, in which the best of film an television’s sci-fi, fantasy and horror genres are honored and awarded for their latest achievements. And man has there been quite a number of accomplishments in this year alone.
Hosted this year by John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Arrow), the biggest winner of the Burbank, California award show was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took home eight of the fifteen awards that it was nominated for by the voters. Amongst these awards were Harrison Ford for Best Actor and Adam Driver for Best Supporting Actor, as well as wins for Best Writing, Best Editing, Best Music, Best Make-Up and Best Special Effects. Coming in second place for the most-honored film was Guillermo Del Toro‘s horror-gothic drama film Crimson Peak, which has gradually gained cult following since its release. In addition to winning Best Horror Film, Crimson Peak took home the Best Supporting Actress award for Jessica Chastain, as well as that for Best Production Design.
“All the A movies are B movies now,” said renowned B-movie star Bruce Campbell, who won the Best Actor award for his reprisal of the character Ash Williams in Ash vs. Evil Dead. “If you dress up like a bat, and fly around a city called Gotham, that’s a B movie. If you’re bitten by a radioactive spider, that’s not only a B movie, that’s a cheesy ’50s B movie. So thank you, B movies, for leading the way so A movies finally understand what entertainment is.”
