The Favourite’ Director Yorgos Lanthimos to Write and Direct ‘Pop 1280’

Coming off of the heels of the numerous Oscar nominations for The Favourite including Best Picture, Greek film, theater, and video writer and director Yorgos Lanthimos seems to be set on his next project. It will be an adaptation of American author Jim Thompson’s 1964 novel Pop. 1280. The director also known for films such as The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer has his next project homed at Imperative Entertainment, while Element Pictures will produce with both Lanthimos and Imperative.

The novel Pop. 1280 follows an extremely corrupt sheriff by the name of Nick Corey. He doesn’t enforce the law and could care less, but even amid his gluttony, sloth, and sex with women he considers easy, Corey hides a number of real problems. He is being bugged by a pair of local pimps and his girlfriend’s husband is on her back. An election is coming up and Corey looks to stay sheriff of Potts County, so he will do whatever it takes to get his way. It has been considered a classic of the mid 20th century, and its story seems fit to Lanthimos’ style of unique and sometimes off-putting storytelling.

The project is in its extremely early stages with Lanthimos currently occupied by award season, but it will be interesting to see if his new project can carry the momentum of his current rush of fame.

Robert Thornson Jr.: My name is Robert and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a B.A. in Film and Media studies with hopes to work in the creative industry. I have always had a passion for storytelling and since youth I've loved film. I grew up loving the movies of directors like Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and many more along with writers such as Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino. One thing I have always done is write about movies and communicate to others information about the "film community" and the industry as well as about the films themselves. I write creatively on a daily basis.
