The End of MoviePass? The Rise and The Fall of the Movie Subscription Service

There has been much speculation circulating on the fate of MoviePass, the movie-going app that has allowed millions of users to see scores of movies at the rock bottom of price of $9.95 a month.  But with the surge of movie fans turning to this high-value subscription service there are many more rumors going around as to how long the service can keep going.

MoviePass began 6 years ago as a service allowing moviegoers to see unlimited movies every month at their local theater. As the service increased in popularity, so did restrictions.  Those restrictions currently include the limitations of only one movie a day, with no repeats of the same movie, and a photograph of the ticket must be taken through the app.

With new changes, including a price increase for new MoviePass users from $9.95 to $14.95, many in the movie industry are speculating on how long MoviePass can survive.  There is also recent competition from AMC’s A-list, an alternative subscription service that allows moviegoers access to any movie, even premium screenings.

For now, only time will tell if the company will fold or thrive in the face of adversity. Die-hard MoviePass fans are still holding onto the hope that their beloved movie subscription service evolves into a mainstay of the modern theater-going experience.
