The Craft is getting a reboot and thus far has found its first actress. Cailee Spaeny is currently in negotiations to star in Columbia Pictures’ adaptation of the 1990s cult classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film’s plot centers on its main protagonist Hannah, a high school outcast who develops a friendship with three other girls and, in turn, examines their own means of witchcraft. This witchcraft is initially used to correct some of the problems in their lives but gradually takes a toll on the girls.
Columbia and Blumhouse will fund The Craft reboot, with Jason Blum serving as a producer alongside Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher. Lucas Wiesendanger will serve as the film’s executive producer alongside Andrew Fleming, who directed the eponymous 1996 film. Zoe Lister-Jones is currently attached to write and direct the reboot, which is expected to enter production in July.
Despite a short career, Spaeny has featured in several major films roles in the past few years, including Pacific Rim: Uprising and Bad Times at the El Royale. Spaeny received her first start as an actress as a young Jane Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex. She currently has an upcoming role in the FX drama entitled Devs.
