‘The Broken Earth’ Book Series Lands at Sony’s TriStar in 7-Figure Deal and Author N.K. Jemisin Set to Adapt

Per Deadline, TriStar Pictures, through Sony Pictures Entertainment’s second seven-figure deal this past week for a multibook series, has won The Broken Earth sci-fi trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. The author is set to adapt the books herself. Each book in the series – The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky – won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. Jemisin is historically the first person to win the award three years in a row and also the first person to win for all three books in a trilogy.

The Fifth Season depicts a harsh futuristic Earth on a continent called the Stillness. The continent endures seasonal apocalyptic events that shake the world during these “seasons”. Inhabitants of this imagined Earth are forced to hole up in communities and rebuild afterward. “Orogenes”, individuals who can draw incredible magical power from the planet’s reservoirs, are essential to the protection of humanity and its fragile communities. They are trained for the task from childhood by a societal order called the Guardians. The orogenes are responsible for holding this unstable world together but are treated brutally.

Jemisin’s series boasts a devoted fan base and has sold millions of copies around the world. The first book also won the Sputnik Award, was nominated for the Nebula Award and the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

Fans are excited for what’s in store for the movie adaptation and they’ll be able to see just how closely it aligns itself to the author’s world on-page and eventually onscreen.
