The Blacklist and the GM Incubator Fund announced the launch of a new scriptwriter-led short film program that will provide two aspiring and diverse filmmakers with $100,000 to produce short films based on their scripts. General Motors will give both selected filmmakers with vehicles to use in their short films. The short films will eventually be submitted to major festivals for consideration at the 2024 Awards Ceremony.
Writers, directors, and writer-director teams who have directed at least one narrative short film and completed feature-length script are eligible to apply for this program. As part of its broader commitment to a fairer Hollywood, The Blacklist and GM Incubator Fund give the first 200 applicants from the traditionally underrepresented community a month of free hosting and will award fee waivers for two free reviews.
While projects of all genres are possible, films that showcase sustainability, electrification, and diversity align with GM’s sustainable, all-electric future and the world’s most inclusive company. However, we will not display scripts that contain excessive violence, illegal drug or substance abuse, road accidents, dangerous driving, or sexually explicit conduct. Applications will be open until August 15th.
An article written on Deadline explains GM and Blacklist fund. “Writer-driven says it all,” said Black List founder Franklin Leonard. “We’re incredibly excited to collaborate with General Motors to provide resources for two screenwriters from underrepresented communities to direct short films based on their scripts with the long-term goal of getting their features financed with them at the helm. I could not be more excited to read the scripts that emerge from this process and see the shorts the selected writers direct based on them.”
Deadline continues to write what GM’s Director of Multicultural Marketing and Development, Tarshena Armstrong said, “The GM Incubator Fund focuses on making strategic investments that provide underrepresented communities opportunities to aid in innovative content and storytelling. Working with the Black List Writer-Driven Shorts Program, we look to make a meaningful impact within local communities while fostering equitable representation.”
