Director Matt Reeves may have created one of the most authentic portraits of Batman in a decade, and fans of the Dark Knight are loving it as The Batman stays on top of the box office for its second weekend. No other film even came close to its $66 million last week. It is however a rather steep decline from its opening weekend. During its debut, Robert Pattinson’s interpretation of Gotham’s dark savior made $134 million. Its $66 million from this past weekend marks more than 50% decline in ticket sales.
Nevertheless, The Batman has officially reached blockbuster, box-office-hit movie status by reaching a grand total of $238 million in the US alone. The film is now setting its sight on a global of $500 million, depending on how well it does both domestically and internationally in the next couple of weeks. Considering that no other big superhero movie is coming out until April 1st with the release of Marvel’s Morbius, it seems like a doable feat for the dark crusader.
The superhero flick is close to three hours long and shows a grungy Gotham filled with organized crime, corruption in the highest ranks of city hall, and psycho serial killers on the loose. Batman tries to stop all three through detective work and violence. The film was a big and very necessary win for Warner Brothers and DC since it will create more excitement for its future superhero films that are all due to release late this year or early in 2023.
