2016 has definitely been a pretty stacked year for animation. Finding Dory, The Secret Life of Pets, Zootopia, and the newly-released Kubo and the Two Strings have all performed well in one way or the other, but there’s one more that was unfortunately overlooked. Based on the bestselling mobile game, Rovio Entertainment’s The Angry Birds Movie hit theaters earlier this summer, making an impressive $347 million worldwide. Now, compared to many of its kind, the film didn’t wow audiences or critics. Nevertheless, it boasted stellar animation and a wonderful voice cast, so it was still an enjoyable summer flick.
It’s rare these days that a big budget animated movie doesn’t get at least one sequel (i.e. Ice Age 2, 3, 4 and 5). And according to an exclusive from WSJ, Rovio has announced that The Angry Birds Movie 2 is officially in development. With all of films that merit sequels but don’t get them, some audiences may be upset that The Angry Birds Movie is the one getting the green light. However, there’s plenty of potential with where the film could go. Since the game’s story is so bare, there’s really an endless number of avenues that the sequel could go down.
For fans of The Angry Birds Movie, there may be another long waiting period before we get the sequel since there was a four year gap between the announcement and release of the first one. So, it all depends on who will be helming the projects, along with planning out the future of this franchise.
We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
